Pauline had been asking Me to build her a dolls house for her for years but I was never motivated at the prospect of building a classic houses with hinged or lift off doors. Eventually with the intention of building something unique, the concept of a dolls house that split in two and opened was developed.
Our aim was to design a house that was truly to scale looking the same as a full scale building even when opened. To achieve this, the design takes into consideration what a house would actually look like if it was “torn in two” exposing the brickwork and floors. When the house is separated and rotated, the joists, floor boards and 27mm thick stone walls are exposed in a realistic manner that is true to scale.
Copper Top Cottage is constructed in two halves and links together using a design protected system of runners and turntables to open and rotate the house for display. The design of the mechanism is we believe totally unique and involves inventive solutions to ensure the package work smoothly.
The cottage is constructed by hand from solid Oak and quality ply wood with no composite materials used anywhere. Even the running gear is constructed from hardwood.
The floors and beams are all hand made in Oak and the walls are to scale at 27mm thick
The house is wired throughout with wall and light sockets in each room carefully hidden where possible behind beams and recessed into the skirting boards. Lights and appliances simply need hanging and plugging in.
A significant challenge was the running gear to allow the house to open, rotate and also allow the extensive wiring to be run to the central distribution board hidden below the house. All these issues were successfully solved as the finished house demonstrates.

As a finishing touch the house is equipped with remote control lighting.
Much of the house contents including the beds, bedding stairs and remote control lighting are available separately.
The cottage is available to order with choice of copper and lead or slate roofing. The stand which supports the house can be manufactured in Oak or Mahogany. As each house is made to order and takes over five weeks to construct, this limited edition cottage is truly a unique item for the disconcerting collector.
